Before it became a world-renowned brand, Lalique was the name of a genius craftsman and extraordinary artist. The name still evokes transparency, enchantment, and French refinement. René Lalique introduced new techniques and materials, creating an extensive iconographic repertoire. His remarkable work, characterized by inventiveness and boldness, established him as a pioneer in modern crystal jewelry and decorative arts.
Lalique Crystal Since 1888
Founded in 1888, the Lalique brand has always been synonymous with brilliance and French luxury. The Lalique factory was established in 1922 by the company’s founder in the village of Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace, a region of France renowned for its crystal-making tradition. To this day, it remains the only factory in the world that produces Lalique crystal products. The brand’s collection today includes Lalique crystal tableware, Lalique vases and stunning Lalique crystal sculptures that seamlessly blend classic and modern design. All products are crafted using centuries-old handcrafted methods.
Since its foundation, Lalique crystal has made history with its vases and their sensuous curves, often adorned with delicate filigree flowers. These items have become inimitable icons, so it’s no surprise that many of the designs are now housed in well-known museums. Lalique’s success has not only secured it a prominent place in cultural exhibitions but has also cemented its legacy in the world of luxury and art.
Lalique Crystal Production
Thanks to the efforts of passionate designers, Lalique creates beautiful pieces each year inspired by René Lalique’s three most favorite and dearest themes: women, flora, and fauna. The company’s designers employ both traditional methods—such as drawing and modeling—and the latest digital technologies, including 3D printing. Once the production process begins at the factory, a crystal blank can undergo up to 40 different processing steps.
The precise and skilled hands of France’s finest artisans craft products of exceptional quality, preserving the company’s time-honored expertise. The initial stages of the lengthy production process involve creating molds. Next, the glassblowers take over in the “hot glass” workshop, where they clean, heat, and shape the piece under extreme temperatures. The crystal can be heated to 1400°C and is manipulated and repositioned using a variety of techniques.
Some large or artistic pieces are made using the “melted wax” technique, which René Lalique utilized before 1930. This method is unique in its use of disposable plaster molds instead of cast iron ones. In the “cold glass” workshops, each piece is hand-finished, a process that accounts for two-thirds of the time needed to create the finished product.
All Lalique crystal creations are selected not only by technical criteria, such as the absence of defects, but also by aesthetics, with full respect for the work of the creative team. At each stage of production, the products undergo strict quality checks. Only after passing these checks is a guarantee of authenticity and quality issued.
