Lladro: a History Begins in 1953

Lladro was founded in 1953 by three brothers Juan, Jose and Vincent Lladro. It was in that year that they set up a porcelain workshop in the backyard of their house in Almacer, near Valencia.

Talented sculptors Lladro developed their own special style, distinguished by clean lines, warmth and romanticism. Their work was quickly noticed, and the small workshop has grown several times over in a short period.

In 1969, the small workshops of the Lladro brothers turned into the whole City of Porcelain that became one of the most modern manufacturings ever. Inside the building they made ideal working conditions for more than 2,000 workers and so the production reached an unprecedented scale.

Lladro City of Porcelain

In the City of Porcelain, located in Tavernes Blanques, Valencia, Lladro creates all of its products.

It is located on a vast territory, the entire space of which is intended for artistic creation and creativity – bright studios and workshops side by side with spacious gardens and sports grounds.

The City of Porcelain is a place open to anyone who wants to visit it.

Thanks to a special program, you can watch the work of the craftsmen and get to know the Lladro Museum.

Every year the complex is visited by 15,000 connoisseurs of Lladro porcelain.

Lladro’s Primary Focus

The primary focus of the Lladro manufacturing is undoubtedly the image of the figurines and the whole completed composition.

Each product should give to its owner an aesthetic pleasure while looking at it, it should literally please the eyes.

Everything in the sculpture should look natural and underline natural postures, plasticity of gestures, finished folds of fabric.

This special attention to details creates an illusion that the figurines are not made of heavy hard porcelain but of elastic and almost weightless materials.

However, the artistic talent of sculptors is only one of the most important components of a modern porcelain masterpiece. Its second component is unique technology.

Lladro’s Artistic Process

Each Lladro product is the fruit of a meticulous and complex artistic process.

The ingredients required to make the Lladro figurines are closely guarded secrets.

The paints and coatings used by the manufacturers are also unknown, but they are the ones that give the porcelain figurines their unique characteristics.

Lladro figurines are made of so-called hard porcelain. Hard porcelain is called in such a way because the mass contains minerals crushed into dust that made it remain solid and not to melt even at a temperature of 1400 ° C.

Being homogeneous and extremely durable, such kind of hard porcelain allows you to create sculptures with small and heavy details, with extremely plastic lines, without the fear that they will fall off.

Once the production process is finished, the piece goes through several quality checks.

Most items are perfect at the end of the process, and those that do not meet Lladro quality standards are destroyed.

So that no one can ever recreate the unique image of the figurine, the shape is broken right after the process is finished and so it won’t be ever repeated.

This action takes place in the presence of official legal entities. Each figurine has its own serial number and over the years it becomes more and more expensive due to its rarity, fragility and its uniqueness.

Lladro Porcelain Perfection

Lladro manufactory preserves old crafting traditions and is constantly in search of new ideas and improvement.

Lladro masters take their inspiration from everything that surround them in everyday life like nature, animals, art, literature, music, religion.

The scenes from ancients epochs become as well the themes for creating figurines and complex compositions.

The wonderful fairy world of Lladro brought fame and recognition to the brand all over the world.

The unique pieces of the Spanish company Lladro are highly valued among connoisseurs of porcelain figurines and become of highest value.
