Hermès Cheval d’Orient Design
Designed by Nathalie Rolland-Huckel, Hermès Cheval d’Orient pays tribute to the Maison’s equestrian origins through a richly detailed vision of horses crossing the steppe and wooded landscapes. The imagery evokes the silk caravans and conviviality of the Orient, drawing on the storytelling tradition of 15th- and 16th-century Persian miniature painting. Horses appear in ceremonial blankets surrounded by flowers, ornamental motifs and polychrome details, creating compositions that unfold like illustrated scenes across the porcelain.
One of the collection’s defining characteristics is its extraordinary decorative complexity. Hermès uses a palette of 29 colours across the collection’s 55 references, covering lunch, dinner, tea and coffee pieces, as well as selected decorative objects. The motifs are not simply repeated from one piece to another: each form can reveal a different arrangement of horses, landscapes, flowers and ornamental details.
Cheval d’Orient also reinterprets the forms and proportions of classic Western tableware. Hermès highlights distinctive shapes such as footed cups and tureens with elegant open handles, combining traditional tableware silhouettes with richly ornamental, Persian-inspired imagery. The result is a coordinated service in which individual pieces retain their own character while sharing the collection’s distinctive visual language.
The porcelain decoration is screen-printed and applied by hand, with a gold line applied by brush by hand. The collection is made in France, reflecting Hermès’ attention to craftsmanship and detail.
Because the decoration includes precious metals, Hermès recommends occasional dishwasher use and preferably hand washing with a soft, non-abrasive sponge to help preserve the beauty and lustre of the decoration. The pieces are not microwave-safe.
