Thierry Hermès first established the Hermès fashion house in 1837 as a bespoke saddlery and harness brand that catered to European nobleman. The quality and craftsmanship of the workshop garnered acclaim, and they were recognized with the First Class Medal twice, in 1855 and 1867, at the Exposition of Paris. Following Thierry’s death, his son, Charles-Emile Hermès, took the helm and opened the Hermès shop on the famed Rue de Faubourg Saint-Honoré – where it is still located today.
Through subsequent generations of the Hermès family, the brand expanded to include small horse riding bags, which ultimately culminated in their first handbag designs in 1922 – the same decade Hermès premiered their first collections of women’s couture apparel. In 1935, the iconic sac à dépêches bag was released, which was renamed the Kelly bag in 1956 after actress and Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly used it to conceal her pregnancy when in public. The Kelly bag would be the first in a long line of famed designs that would come to illustrate the 20th century, including uniquely patterned silk scarves favored by Jacqueline Kennedy and the Birkin bag (named again after an acclaimed actress, Jane Birkin).
More recently, Hermès has begun including home accessories and furniture in their collections, all exhibiting the inimitable Hermès aesthetic of traditional elegance and exquisite craftsmanship. Hermès continues to be regarded as one of the highest luxury brands, and their wide offerings of couture, accessories, timepieces and jewelry are some of the most prized and sought after in the world.
